MERRICKS - RED HILL RAIL TRAIL
(Grade 3, 14km return hike)
It was such a beautiful winters day that I decided to jump in the car and take my little pooch on an adventure. The Merricks – Red Hill Rail Trail is an easy 14 km Grade 3 hike where you pass thru the peaceful rural areas of the Mornington Peninsula. Starting from Merricks General Store, you can park the car, pick up a coffee from the Art Gallery Verandah Café and head off toward the Equestrian Centre to find the start of the trail.
Walking along the first section takes you along side the Equestrian ovals and Stonier Winery. It really is beautiful at this time of the year, the air is fresh and the grass is lush green.
This would be a great walk or even bike ride for a family, it’s quite a gentle incline all the way to Red Hill, where you can have a break and grab some lunch at the Red Hill Village and return back at a leisurely pace.
All in all, the entire hike took me 3 hours to complete. You get glimpses of the ocean along the way; pass a few wineries and plenty of farmlett type properties with sheep, horses and some cattle.
Even though we’ve had quite a bit of rain over the last 2 weeks, the track remained very stable and not too many patches of mud to get stuck in.
Definitely a little hike I’d do again.
