Tyvek is a great material for ultralight backpacking and as a groundsheet for protecting the bottom of your tent!
It is strong, light weight, smooth and resistant to water, rot, mildew and abrasion. It has a high strength to weight ratio and when you wash it, it becomes softer, quieter and more manageable. It won't bunch up under your tent like other materials.
Sold by the foot, the roll width is 9 feet and the min order length is 3ft. Place a quantity of 3 = 3ft - The price listed is per foot.
WASHING YOUR TENT GROUNDSHEET PRIOR TO USE:
You want to make sure you allow extra width and length when cutting your groundsheet because after you've washed it, it shrinks approx 5%. Wash it on a cold cycle with mild soap. Do not put in the dryer or iron the tyvek as it will melt.
I suggest putting it in for 2 short cycles with cold water.
Note: Sold by the foot - Min order is 3ft please up a min qty of 3 when ordering
This is not Tyvek 1443R but the thicker Homewrap Tyvek.
An even lighter alternative is our Polycryo groundsheet
It's super useful to be able to buy Tyvek in smaller quantities than those commercially available elsewhere. The order process was easy & the delivery quick. Also appreciated the invaluable advice from Lisa on various items of lightweight hiking gear.
Great service...delivered super fast, in time for our great walk.
Bought more out of curiosity, yet to seriously use. Washing has reduced incredible crackle
Ive used Tyvek as a ground sheet for many years works perfectly.
Ultralighthiker was super quick with shipping and highly recommend them!
Tyvek is tough stuff! and waterproof, order your correct length, when it arrives it's very stiff (and very noisy!).
Wash it twice, it shrinks about 5% and becomes softer and less noisy, don't try and iron it
even on a low iron temp, it will just melt.
Put up your tent, put the Tyvek underneath then mark and cut to final size.
You can Superglue loops of ribbon to it to make tie down points (Superglue seems to work well with Tyvek)
, Tyvek seems to take spray paint well if you wish to paint the edges of the ground sheet.
Final product is a bit bulkier than I thought it would be but very light weight.
