Aussies Heading Out there

Meet Lauren and Scott - A couple of young Aussies leaving to hike the AT in a few weeks

So who are they? - We’re a young couple about to embark on the Appalachian Trail, come March 18th 2020 and we can’t be more ready. We have been together for 5 years and have always strived to do things a little outside of the norm and to see the world from a different perspective. Being Australian and hearing about this enormous trail in the US and the community surrounding, we had to be a part of it. We did everything within our power to make this dream a reality and we can’t be more excited to get started. The average 9-5 lifestyle is not something that either of us live for and the trail allows disconnection from an over connected and distracted reality.

Follow their journey and subscribe to their channel as they Vlog their trip along the AT. Good luck guys!!

Meet Grant Heale - He's got a dream and nothing's going to stop him!!

Here's a big shout out to one of Ultralight Hiker's fav customers Grant Heale. Grant left Melbourne last week and is patiently waiting to start his AT 2020 adventure. Unfortunately, Grant had a bad run in the 4 months leading up to his departure with crazy injuries and 6 operations, the last one just a couple of weeks before he left. Now he's been struck down with the flu at the Amicalola Lodge, delaying his start by a few days.

Nothing's going to stop this big fella from realising his dream and we wish him all the best. We'll have regular updates from Grant along the way.

You can follow Grant on instagram @grantos_healeington_iii

Who is Grant? My name is Grant Heale and I am about to embark of a journey that I and my ever patient wife and family have been helping me plan for 4 years, ever since a mate of mine convinced me to head out for an overnighter. Several years, youtube videos and gear lists later, I am sitting in the Amicalola Falls Lodge waiting to experience 5-6 months of just one thing to do everyday ... Walk

I cannot wait for every cold, wet, day in the smokies, every rolling hill in Virginia, every rock in "Rocksylvania" and the utter beauty and ruggedness of the North ... In the words of my incredibly intelligent sister Michelle ... " Remember why you started"

Meet Dane & Emma - A young couple from Townsville, sunny North Queensland

The Who? Dane and Emma are both full-time engineers, and enjoy the good things in life like cheese platters, Saturday afternoon beers, and of course hiking and enjoying the outdoors as much as they can.

The WHY? They began talking about doing the PCT mid last year. They had already completed several multi-day hikes including the Overland track and the Thorsborne Trail on Hinchinbrook Island. Until only recently, doing something like the PCT had remained a pipe dream, something unreachable, or unachievable. But, after building their first house together, and enjoying the comforts that a traditional, domestic lifestyle brings, they began yearning for something more challenging. About halfway through the DarwinOnTheTrail PCT series, they were hooked. Dane remembers saying "I'd love to do something like this one day". And after a short consideration, Emma says: "well... why don't we try to do it next year?"

...and here we are!

Dane is attempting the PCT because he wants to challenge himself now while he still can. It’s a chance to prove to himself (or at least remind himself) that there is more than what he sees in the mirror. He hopes to grow and change and learn something about himself he didn’t know before. Above all, he wants to experience adventure and share it with his incredible partner in crime.

For Emma, the PCT provides an opportunity to do something deliberate and challenging, something she has to choose to do every day. Not every day on the trail is sunshine and rainbows and the PCT provides Emma with the chance to see where her limits are and to push past them, all the while sharing the experience with her favorite person, Dane.

THE TREK

My favourite place to start checking out who's hiking each year is The Trek. There is soooo much on this website you could spend weeks reading, watching and downloading all the information available. theTrek.co is dedicated to shining a spotlight on current hikers’ journeys.  They have more than a hundred current thru-hikers sharing their journeys on the 3 big trails, the Pacific Crest Trail, Appalachian Trail and the Continental Divide Trail.

Whether you want to be entertained, informed, or just live vicariously through the adventures of those who have dropped everything to walk ridiculously long distances, theTrek.co is the right place to start.

Head over to their YouTube channel

for a list of their current hiker vlogs.

Past Thru-Hiker vloggers?

Watching YouTube videos of past thru-hikers can give you a good idea of the equipment, strategies, and fitness level you’ll need to get you to the end. They all have great information and are a good place to start your research. That’s not to say that what they recommend is exactly what you should carry, but it’s a great place to save time by getting common questions answered and obtaining real gear information.
